Thermotherapy is recognized around the world as an effective treatment for muscle and joint pain. When used warm, the therapeutic pad promotes blood circulation and allows proteins and oxygen to reach the affected areas, naturally relieving pain.
Who is heat therapy for?
Heat therapy is suitable from birth to the end of life! Its therapeutic benefits promote relaxation and relieve inflammation and pain, whatever the source. It can therefore be used to soothe aches and pains at all stages of life:
- Early childhood aches and pains, such as colic, teething and ear infections
- Growing pains, such as muscle aches
- Pain related to femininity and motherhood, such as menstrual cramps and breast engorgement
- Sports–related pain, such as sprains, strains and aches
- Chronic aches and pains, such as back pain, tendonitis and more.
- Body pains related to chemotherapy treatments
What to choose: dry or moist heat?
There are two types of heat in thermotherapy: dry heat and moist heat.
Dry heat works by dehydrating the skin, which can cause irritation or discomfort. Often delivered with an electric pad, a water bottle or a dry heat pack filled with cherry pits, it is easy to use and can deliver even, consistent heat depending on the type of hot water bottle. To avoid burns, you can usually put a timer on the electric pad so that it stops providing heat after a set time.
Used at the same temperature as a dry hot water bottle, moist heat penetrates deep into the muscles and relieves pain much more effectively, in addition to promoting relaxation. What’s more, moist heat does not dehydrate the skin like its dry alternative. Because moist heat penetrates deeper, it relieves pain more quickly.
How does moist heat therapy work?
Heat promotes muscle relaxation and pain relief. It relieves joint stiffness by stimulating blood circulation in the painful area. Thanks to the influx of oxygenated blood in the painful area, the development of lactic acid is slowed down and it’s one of the elements that generate sustained pain, especially in the case of osteoarthritis, sprains and strains, tendonitis and muscle spasms or chronic back pain.
What are the benefits of moist heat therapy?
The benefits of heat therapy are numerous.
Heat is a natural antispasmodic
Known for its soothing effect, heat therapy is particularly effective in relieving pain related to digestive problems, such as colic, stomach aches, gas, cramps and bloating.
It promotes muscle relaxation
Deep relaxation, comfort and reassurance—moist heat relieves pain and muscle stiffness by forcing muscles to relax. It is thanks to this relaxing effect that moist heat also helps eliminate muscle spasms.
More heat, less stiffness
Muscle stiffness can be due to several reasons, such as sleeping in an uncomfortable position or working from home with a less ergonomic setup. This can lead to reduced mobility and pain in the morning. Moist heat will help relax the muscles and relieve the pain.
It reduces inflammation
Used in contrast hydrotherapy, moist heat used alternately with a cold compress (or a cooled therapeutic teddy bear!) can work wonders to relieve sinusitis. A repeated use of the heated compress can also treat styes.
Heat promotes blood circulation
By promoting blood circulation in the body, injuries heal faster and pain is reduced. This is particularly helpful in relieving acute pain due to and contributes to the healing of the tendon in the case of chronic tendonitis.
It relieves stress
Mental stress and tension in the body often go hand in hand and moist heat plays an important role in releasing tension and promoting relaxation.
